The Parish Nurse is a registered professional nurse who serves
through the church to provide preventive care and education, with a
focus on health promotion and physical, mental, and spiritual
well-being.
The Parish Nurse serves as a health counselor, educator, and liaison between individuals and the church and/or community resources.
The Parish Nurse is an employee of Covenant Health Services, serving the congregation of First Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge.

WHAT THE PARISH NURSE DOES Practice within the Scope and Standards for Parish Nursing as defined by the American Nurses Association. Private health counseling/consultations. All information is kept confidential, except as agreed on by the individual and the parish nurse. Home, hospital, and nursing home visits. Phone contacts regarding health and bereavement issues. Blood pressure, pulse and respiratory assessment. Loan medical equipment as available. Provide information on community resources and help individuals and families obtain needed health and social services. Provide educational materials and information through health programs, brochures, articles in the church newsletter, videos, and books (which can be loaned out to church members).
WHAT THE PARISH NURSE DOES NOT DO Provide hands-on care, except for blood pressure, pulse and respiratory assessment. Replace or provide care such as the following: * Medical care and diagnosis * Home care services (provided by nurses and ancillary staff) * Physical, occupational, or speech therapy * Psychological counseling * Social services |
