God's spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal and satisfy. As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

"Nearly all the wisdom we possess, that is to say, true and sound wisdom, consists of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves. But, while joined by many bonds, which one proceeds and brings forth the other is not easy to discern. In the first place, no one can look upon himself without immediately turning his thoughts to the contemplation of God, in whom he ‘lives and moves.’ For, quite clearly, the mighty gifts with which we are endowed are hardly from ourselves; indeed, our very being is nothing but subsistence in the one God."

GATHERING AROUND GOD= S WORD

Introit "Amazing Grace" Stephen Hatfield

*Call to Worship --From "Bread for the Journey," ed. Ruth C. Duck

We have come to affirm our historic faith,

To worship the God of our mothers and fathers.

We have come to remember God’s benefits to us, the living,

To respond in thanksgiving to the mighty works of God in our lives.

We have come to affirm our trust in the God of all futures,

To whose name be blessing and honor, glory and power forever and ever.

Amen.

*Hymn No. 443 "O Christ, the Great Foundation" AURELIA

*Call to Confession

*Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world.

Time for silent confession.

And all God= s people said: Amen.

*Declaration of Forgiveness

*Glory Be to the Father Hymn No. 577 Avery and Marsh

*The Peace of Christ

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another.

The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

And also with you.

Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

Prayer of the People and the Lord= s Prayer (Traditional, p.16, Hymnal)

*Creed The Heidelberg Catechism (Question 1)What is your only comfort, in life and in death? That I belong – body and soul, in life and in death – not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

CONCERT BY WENDELL WERNER: There will be a concert at 6:00 p.m. this evening by Wendel Werner and LOTS of women at Graystone Presbyterian Church. This is the first in a series of benefit concerts for Hand Up For Women. This is an organization that assists women trying to better themselves as they are coming out of unfortunate situations such as abusive relationships, illiteracy, and substance abuse. Hand Up For Women works with the individual women as they learn the tools that allow them to be self-sufficient within their culture. The idea is that the organization gives women a "hand up" instead of a "hand out." First Presbyterian Church will host one of the concerts on February 28th.

Speaking Mercy! is a bible study for lesbian and gay Christians who have been "spiritually abused" by church and faith traditions and is aimed at bringing healing and restoration.  This group meets every Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m. at Gary Jarnigan's home.  Please see Daniel Tipton or Gary Jarnigan for directions and details.  Straight supporters of full inclusion of all people into God's kingdom are welcome to attend as well.

MIDDLE SCHOOL AND SENIOR HIGH ANNOUNCEMENTS:

October 25th: Fellowship with Farragut Presbyterian at Farragut, leave church at 5:30 and return by 8:00 p.m.  Dinner will be served at Farragut.  There will be NO youth choir practice tonight.

October 28th: Deadline for turning in forms for High School retreat. No refunds will be given once I submit the forms on October 29th.  The retreat dates are November 14th and 15th at Fall Creek Falls.  Cost is $75.00.

November 1st:  Special Whole Church Family Worship Service led by Wendel Werner at 6:30 p.m. No Youth Fellowship/Dinner or Choir Practice.  Everyone is welcome to participate.

November 15th: Special Youth Fellowship:  Worship/Dinner at the PC on UT Campus.  Although we typically don't have fellowships after a retreat weekend, we have signed up to feed and fellowship with the Presbyterian Center students on UT's campus.  Anyone who can help by cooking a pot of chili and providing some fixings like corn chips, sour cream etc., will be greatly appreciated.  This event is not "mandatory" so if you're too tired from the awesome weekend at Fall Creek Falls, you can stay home and rest or catch up on homework...but I will still need food enough to feed about 35-40 college students and our own participants.  Call Daniel if you can help out! 865-256-4438

Morgan Scott Project Christmas Collection:  The Social Concerns committee is now accepting donations for teens in the area served by the Morgan/Scott project.  You may donate money or new, unwrapped gifts geared toward teens.  We hope to send any contributions to them in early December.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

LEARNING ABOUT LONG TERM PLANNING: Planning for the long term future means many things for all of us, no matter whether we are 20 or 90 or somewhere in between.  Each of our lives touches many individuals and the information and choices we make around our future will affect many people – ourselves, our friends, our families, our colleagues.  Please join Frances Caldwell, Director of Development and Stewardship for the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia and this year's Stewardship speaker, after worship on November 1 in Room 102 to talk about the many considerations we should all address as we plan for the future.

"A Closer Walk" class for November 1 will be canceled so that folks can attend Frances Caldwell's seminar on Long-Term Planning.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNER: We serve from 5:15-6:15 p.m. Cost just $4 per person, $12 per family, and children 6 years and under free.

October 28th Menu: Vegetable Soup with Kielbasa, Corn Bread and Home made Bread, Oyster crackers, Salad and Veggie Tray, Fruit, Chocolate Pudding cake and four assorted cakes, and Ice Cream.

Living Waters in Belize: There will be a planning meeting to discuss locations, timing, and fund-raising needs for our next steps in providing Living Waters to Belize on Wednesday, November 4 immediately following the church dinner at 6:00 PM in Room 6 of the Sanctuary. Mark your calendar now!

What’s stewardship about? At First Presbyterian, it is about a lot of things, including essential repairs to the church’s roof and communicating our church missions among our members and to the wider world. The stewardship campaign to raise funds for church activities and operations during calendar year 2010 is underway. If you do not receive your stewardship packet in the mail by October 31, please call the church office at 483-1318. Also, mark your calendars for a transformational stewardship opportunity on Sunday, November 1. Frances Caldwell, Director of Development and Stewardship for the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, will preach and offer a seminar on Sunday, November 1. Please join us to hear her refreshing outlook on stewardship.
